This type of fossilized live oak wood is only found in a small area of Montgomery County Texas from the Beaumont Geological Formation (Sands). The Beaumont Formation was formed during the Pleistocene Era (Ice Age). An extremely rare type of petrified wood, not even believed to exist until only recently since full round logs were discovered. This fossil wood and geological layer is thousands of years old.
This specific fossil wood originates out of a single distinctive clay layer only found in Montgomery County TX. Suspect a single massive flood swept down to the Gulf Coast depositing the sediment over a once living ancient oak forest. The forest was covered quickly as many pieces are already heavily rotted, buggy, even terrestrial termite trails have been found petrified in the fossil wood.
