Description
This is a nice, larger sized, thick cut and very richly colored green, khaki and white Hampton Butte petrified wood slab with a neat variety of colors and crazy wood grain! This is just a partial cross section from what must have been a truly enormous tree. I'm not positive, but I suspect the gray colored bands were actually the bark on the log that separated in the cast as the log was petrified though it's difficult to be certain as some casts do this with the growth rings of the trunk as well. Hampton Butte wood is a bit of an enigma because the logs are often partially decomposed before they fully petrify and you tend to find more casts than faithfully preserved rounds with clear growth structure. A few however are a bit of both, like this one! If you look at the jumbled green pattern of this colorful stone slab under magnification you can see that the darker gray segments are reasonably well preserved wood with areas of visible structure. This vast forest produces a mix of fossil hardwoods, conifers and even ferns so you never really no what you're getting when you start cutting and you just hope there is some structure amongst all that color to tell the story of how this amazing fossil stone began! The stone is solid and took a nice polish, ready to be shown in your collection. A great opportunity at a large, relatively rare and uniquely colored fossil wood treasure! Good luck!NOTE: Second photo is taken from a mate cut slab off of the same large log. It's included to show edge detail and finish quality which are virtually identical in this piece but difficult to capture in a photo.
Arguably one of the most well known and interesting petrified wood deposits in Oregon is the "Green Wood" deposit at Hampton Butte in Central Oregon. This wood is more jasperized than agatized and is often more of a cast than a wood replacement, though exceptions to both of these are certainly found. The logs are more often than not fairly fractured, but the colors are unmatched anywhere else. The dominant color is green - REALLY GREEN! These are accented with white, yellow, red, orange and other classic jasper tones - but green is what it's all about if you're looking for a good Hampton Butte specimen. Not every piece will polish well, and they don't all look an awful lot like wood, but a good specimen is tough to beat and a must have for any serious petrified wood collection - or even if you just happen to love green!
This slab is kind of tough to get a good photo of, but the color is pretty true on my monitor. It's a fairly green stone with an almost khaki hue. It stands out as an amazing natural specimen in a color rarely found elsewhere. There's a ton of white agate inclusions throughout the rock. It's got a pretty high agate concentration and took a reasonable polish - something we work hard to produce on every stone we sell!
If you haven't seen our petrified wood specimens before then you've been missing one of the best treasures found on eBay! We work hard to find the best specimens from the most prized locations and then work with our magic to create a world class specimen for your collection. The piece is quite solid and meant to be handled. A quick squirt of windex will remove fingerprints from the glassy polished surface.
It measures about 11" x 6 1/2" across the polished face. It is a thick cut about 0.87" thick. Weight is about 3.74 lbs.
