Description
Oak (Quercus sp.)Columbia Plateau Basalts Group, Miocene
Deschutes Canyon, Oregon
** A small slab of oak woith very strong medullary ray pattern from this legendary locality. The site was on top of the canyon walls along Gordon Ridge about four miles upstream of the confluence of the Deschutes River and the Columbia River. In recent years, the ranchers who own the land on the sides of the canyon walls have closed their property to collecting. As a consequence, this especially nice material has now become much more difficult to obtain. This particular specimen came out of the inventory of a Deschutes Canyon local cutter who cut very thin slices off of logs in order to make coffee tables (the slabs would be placed on a circular jig and covered with clear resin). We were fortunate to get some of his unused inventory (most of the resin in the coffee tables have become discolored over the past 40 years and have been discarded!) This specimen has the nice characteristics that make Deschutes Canyon material desirable -- good eye appeal with a nice definition of medullary rays, plus outstanding woody fine structure (see our photomicrograph). Don't let this one get away! This slice measures 4" x 2.75" on the polished face and 1/8" thick. Because of the thin nature of this piece, it has been backed with fiberglass to increase its strength.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
